Student Loan Payoff Timeline

Watch your balance fall year by year, with the milestones — halfway paid, final year, done — on a timeline.

PayoffAug 2036

Understanding this calculator

Loan statements show this month; they never show the shape of the whole journey. This timeline draws it: the slow early years when interest eats most of each payment, the accelerating middle, and the steep final stretch. Seeing the curve explains why extra payments early matter more than the same dollars later.

The milestones are deliberately psychological — the halfway mark and the final year are the points where borrowers most often either accelerate or coast. Knowing where they fall turns an open-ended obligation into a countable one.

Assumptions and methodology

  • Standard monthly amortization at your rate and payment, reported yearly.
  • Milestones mark the first month the balance falls below 75%, 50%, and 25% of the original, plus the payoff month.

Last reviewed August 30, 2026. Year-specific figures show their tax or data year in the tool; data is reviewed when the IRS, SSA, and CMS publish annual updates.

Common questions

My payment barely dents the balance early on. Is something wrong?

That's amortization: early payments are interest-heavy by structure. The timeline shows the tipping point where principal starts winning — and how extras pull that point closer.
