What this may mean for you
The fixed payment is the whole trick — minimums shrink as the balance falls, which is why they take decades (see the Minimum Payment Cost calculator for the damage). Freeze a number, automate it on the due date, and stop using the card until it's gone: the math only holds if new charges stop.

Understanding this calculator
Credit-card interest compounds against you at rates that dwarf almost any investment return, which makes payoff the highest-yield 'investment' most cardholders have available. The two questions that matter: when will this balance reach zero at my current payment, and what payment gets me there by the date I actually want?
Fixed payments beat minimum payments by years, not months — because minimums shrink as the balance falls, stretching the timeline. Pick a fixed number, automate it, and the balance falls on a schedule you chose.
Assumptions and methodology
- Interest accrues monthly at APR ÷ 12 on the remaining balance; your fixed payment is applied each month.
- The by-date mode uses standard amortization to find the level payment that reaches zero in your chosen months.
- Assumes no new charges and a constant APR; promotional-rate expirations are not modeled.

Common questions
Should I use a balance-transfer card instead?
A 0% transfer can genuinely help if the fee (typically 3–5%) is less than the interest you'd otherwise pay AND you can clear the balance inside the promo window. Run this calculator at 0% with your transfer fee added to see.
